Gross and Net
Gross (brutto) means the price before taxes and net (netto) the price after taxes.
Example:
A DVD is sold in a shop in Germany for 9,99 €. In Germany 19% value-added tax apply to a DVD, so that 1,90€ taxes have to be paid and the shop keeper can keep 8,09 €. The 9,99 € is the gross (brutto) and the 8,09 € the net (netto) in this case.
