    Matrix

Matrices are required in the screening process for creating annotations and for calculating the age rating classification. They therefore form the basis of every screening.

The Matrix tab (1) allows you to perform the following actions:

    • Create a new matrix
    • Edit, copy, or delete existing matrices
    • Edit the calculation for a matrix

1 How to create and edit matrices

Matrices are required in the screening process for categorizing annotations as well as for calculating the age rating. They therefore form the basis of every screening.

To create a new layer-1 category, select the Create new matrix button (1).

Existing matrices, on the other hand, can be selected from a drop-down menu (2) to be edited.

When creating a new matrix, this dialog appears where the name of the matrix can be determined.

1.1 How to create and edit categories

Matrices are made up of multiple categories, which are divided into three layers, with one main layer and two subordinate layers.

Within a matrix, any number of different categories can be defined, which can be arranged hierarchically across up to three levels (layers).

New categories are created by clicking New category (1).

By clicking the plus button of the respective layer-one or layer-two category, a subcategory is created.

To edit an existing category, click the pencil icon to the right of the desired category to open the category dialog.

1.2 How to set the code, absolute points and relative points

Categories can be given a name (designation) and a code (abbreviation) to select them when making annotations during the screening process.

Also, absolute and relative points can be assigned to determine how a category will be weighed in the final rating (age rating).

Furtermore other specifications such as selectability, descriptive texts, results texts and mail triggers can be set.

    1. Code/Abbreviation: Assign a unique code to the category (e.g., G). This code is used to identify the category when creating annotations during screening. Therefore, it should represent the category in a concise form.
    2. Designation: Assign a specific name to the category. A category cannot be created without a name

ℹ️ During screening, this abbreviation can be used to quickly find the category by entering it in the annotation dropdown.

    3. Text: Enter a description of the category that defines it in more detail.
    4. Result text: Enter a result text for the category. The result text becomes relevant for
    5. Absolute Points:  Define the points for the parental rating of a category, which are used along with the points of the other categories to calculate the total score.
    6. Relative Points: Use + or − to specify whether the assigned relative points should be added or deducted. Enter the corresponding relative point value into the field next to it. If no relative points are assigned, the highest values are always used for the category in the final rating.

The checkboxes allow to further specify a category.

Categories can be made selectable for making annotations in the screening proces by ticking the checkbox named Selectable in screening (1).

Alos, a mail trigger (2) can be activated via the checkbox.

Risk dimensions and context factor are special additions to a screening report that can be made available upon request (see Special additons for screening reports).

Calculation of Absolute and Relative values during screening:

    Absolute Values (General Rule):
The highest values are always used for the category in the final rating.

    Relative Values:
If relative values have been assigned to a category, the following rules apply:

    • When multiple relative values are present, the final rating is calculated based on the sum of all positive and negative relative values of all categories.
    • If the sum of all assigned relative arguments is less than or equal to -10:
A final relative value of -10 is applied, meaning the total rating is scaled down by 10 points.
    • If the sum of all assigned relative arguments is greater than or equal to –10:
A final relative value of +10 is applied, meaning the total rating is scaled up.

The order in which relative values are assigned does not affect the result.

1.3 How the point allocation works

In this section, score ranges (numbers of points) are connected with specific (age) ratings.

By clicking on the Calculation menu (1), the point distribution for the selected matrix can be viewed and modified:

Within the calculation, the ratings can be selected from a dropdown box; with each rating being assigned a point range (from/to) and a color.

Also, a remark can be added, which is displayed along with the age rating.

ℹ️ Age ratings are defined in the parameters.

Parameters can be accessed and edited by users with administration rights. If you need more information, please contact your admin or our CreateCtrl support.

The point calculation (total score) is based on:

    • the defined total score of a matrix
    • the addition or subtraction of the matrix's relative points
    • deductions resulting from a matrix context

The calculation is performed during the screening of video content, depending on the selected matrix and matrix type. Based on that calculated score, a rating is assigned.

The resulting rating, along with the corresponding calculation result, is displayed in the upper section of the Annotation area:

2 Special additions for screening reports

The features described below for generating reports can be made available upon request.

    2.1 Risk Dimensions

A category can be flagged as a risk dimension (1) at Layer 1. The result text (2) of the screening Report can then be configured so that only the highest classification of the categories flagged as risk dimensions is listed.

The result text consists of the following components:

    1. Abbreviation ("G"): The abbreviation  defined at Layer 1 (see Code, absolute points and relative points).
    2. Name of the risk dimension incl. intensity ("Leicht ängstigende Szene" = Slightly frightening scene): The label of the annotation in the first entry with the highest absolute value of all annotations within this risk dimension, even if it was not set itself. The text in parentheses at the end is omitted.
Note: If this annotation was set in the first entry, it should not be listed twice. (Example: G1a – f, A1a – f).
    3. Bullet points for the annotated aspects ("Verängstigende, leidende Menschen" = Frightened, suffering persons): For all annotations that correspond to the risk dimension in terms of classification (see point 2), the entry in the Result Text field is displayed. (Example: all with rating 16).
    4. Context sentence remains as before ("Die Inszenirerung ist genretypisch." = The staging is typical of the genre) – See previous screenshot under Result text.
    5. General sentence linked to the age rating ("Die Darstellung übersteigt nicht die Verarbeitungsfähigkeit von ab 16-Jährigen." = The depiction does not exceed the processing ability of viewers aged 16 and above): Integrated via a new field in the calculation matrix (see Remark for ratings in Calculation dialog).

The components are listed in the report in descending order by absolute value.

    Exceptions:

    • If only the "catch-all" of a risk dimension is selected, only the general sentence appears (Remark for ratings) without sub-points. (Example: A1b, G1c)
    • If no annotations are made, the following sentence is output: "Contains no scenes relevant to youth protection."

    2.2 Context Factors

A category can be flagged as a context factor (1) at Level 1.Then, only one entry from Level 3 can be selected per Level 2.
Depending on the configuration of the result text in the Screening Report (see previous chapter), the context factors are listed following the risk dimensions.

    General Assessment
The calculation table contains an additional text field. The text entered there can be included at the end of the result text in the Screening Report as a closing sentence (see Remark for ratings in Calculation dialog).

    3 How to manage matrices

The following chapters cover how to move matrices between different layers (hierarchies/levels), how to copy and delete matrices, how to set matrices as default and how to activate/deactivate them.

    3.1 Move matrices between layers

Within a matrix, any number of different categories can be defined, which can be arranged hierarchically across up to three levels (layers).

Individual categories can be repositioned via drag and drop.

Reposition categories onto the same layer

Drag the desired category (1) above or below the other category (2) whose layer you want to inherit.

The category (1) will be inserted correspondingly (above or below) at the same layer.

The category that has previously been on level 3 wil move to layer 2 (E3), remaining subordinated to the repositioned category.

    Reposition categories onto different layers

Drag the desired category (1) onto a category (2) it is supposed to be subordinated to.

The category (1) is now on layer 2, subordinate to the other category (E).

    3.2 Copy and delete categories

In order to reuse a matrix´s configuration to create a new one, matrices can be copied.

To copy an existing matrix, select the desired matrix from the dropdown and click the Copy button in the menu.

Enter the name of the copy in the dialog and confirm.

The copied matrix will then appear already selected in the dropdown and can be edited.

To delete a matrix, select the desired matrix from the dropdown and click the Delete button in the menu.

3.3 Set matrices as default and activate/deactivate them

When set as default, a matrix will be preselected when adding annotations in the screening process.

By ativating or deactivating a matrix, users can determine whether a matrix is selectable for the screening process.

Matrices can be set as default and activated or deactivated by clicking the corresponding buttons.

3.4 Download/Upload matrix and export to Excel

Furhermore, matrices can be downloaded and uploaded to Shield and be exported to Excel format.

In the top right of the Matrix tab, the Excel Export button allows each matrix to be exported to Excel and be saved.

Using the Matrix Upload and Matrix Download buttons, matrices can be downloaded and uploaded to Shield. Import and exports are performed in JS format.
